Early robot vacuums were little more than glorified bump-and-run machines. They would wander aimlessly, bounce off furniture, and hope for the best. But as the technology matures, those days are fading fast. Today's models are packing serious onboard intelligence that changes how they clean and how they navigate.
Tech columnist Jim Rossman notes that the shift has been dramatic. Where older units relied on random patterns and simple sensors, modern robots use lidar, cameras, and advanced mapping software. They can learn the layout of a home, remember where the couch is, and avoid the pile of cables in the corner. Some can even recognize specific objects like shoes or pet bowls and steer clear.
The result is a cleaning experience that feels less like a novelty and more like a genuine household appliance. Instead of running into a chair leg repeatedly, a smart vacuum will plot a path around it. It can clean room by room on a schedule, return to its dock when the battery runs low, and resume exactly where it left off.
This evolution is not just about convenience. It also means better coverage and less frustration. Users no longer have to babysit the device or clear the floor of every stray item. The technology has reached a point where the vacuum does the thinking, leaving the owner with one less chore to worry about.
