One of the more surprising tools in the Navy's kit is a gaming engine. The same software used to build realistic video game worlds is now being deployed to train shipyard workers. Instead of learning on the job with expensive materials and tight deadlines, welders and electricians can practice in a virtual environment. This cuts down on errors and reduces the time it takes to get new hires up to speed.

On the acquisition side, the Navy has pushed through changes that allow for faster contracting and more flexible purchasing. Instead of locking into rigid, multi-year deals that often lead to delays, program managers can now adjust orders based on real-time production needs. This shift has helped keep parts flowing to the yards without the usual bottlenecks.

The combination of these efforts is starting to pay off. Production rates for Virginia-class submarines are climbing, and the Navy is also laying groundwork for the next-generation Columbia-class boats. While challenges remain, especially with workforce shortages and supplier capacity, the focus on tech and reform is giving shipbuilders a clearer path forward.
