New technology advances early autism diagnosis in children

New technology advances early autism diagnosis in children

A new approach to autism screening is helping families catch developmental signs much earlier, with a program in South Bend making the process more accessible for primary care doctors. The Early Autism Evaluation initiative, run by Primary Care Partners of South Bend, trains pediatricians and family medicine providers to identify red flags for autism spectrum disorder during routine well-child visits. This means parents no longer have to wait months for a specialist referral or travel long distances for an evaluation.

The technology behind the program uses standardized observation tools and parent questionnaires that can be completed in a single appointment. If a child shows potential signs, the doctor can begin the diagnostic process on the spot rather than sending the family to a separate clinic. Early detection is critical because it allows for earlier intervention, which has been shown to improve language, social skills, and behavior outcomes.

For families, the change reduces stress and uncertainty. Instead of wondering if a toddler's delayed speech or lack of eye contact is normal, they get answers from a trusted provider they already see. The program also helps address disparities in diagnosis, since children in rural or underserved areas often face longer waits for specialist care. By embedding autism screening into primary care, more children can get support before they even start school.
