Almost from the moment ChatGPT was launched in 2022, fears that artificial intelligence will produce a "job apocalypse" have abounded. Popular concerns regarding technological unemployment have been stoked by predictions from technology company executives that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level jobs in the next one to five years or that work will become unrecognizable within a decade. Yet beneath the surface of these alarming forecasts lies a recurring pattern: each wave of new technology brings with it the same anxieties about economic freedom and labor markets that previous generations faced.
The current AI transition is unique in its speed and scope, but the underlying worries are not new. The Luddites of the 19th century smashed weaving machines, fearing the loss of their livelihoods. Factory automation in the 20th century sparked protests over displaced assembly line workers. Today, white-collar professionals worry that algorithms will replace lawyers, accountants, and customer service representatives. The question is not whether some jobs will vanish, but whether new ones will emerge quickly enough to absorb displaced workers.
Proponents of AI argue that the technology will create new categories of work, just as the internet gave rise to social media managers and app developers. Critics counter that the pace of change may outstrip society's ability to retrain workers, widening inequality and concentrating economic power in the hands of a few tech giants. The tension between innovation and stability remains unresolved, and the debate over economic freedom in an age of intelligent machines is only just beginning.
