Runway Collision at LaGuardia Could Have Been Prevented with Existing Safety Tech, NTSB Reveals

A catastrophic near-miss at New York’s LaGuardia Airport last year might have been entirely avoided if a commonly available safety system had been in place, according to a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The incident, which involved a Delta Air Lines jet and a firetruck on an active runway, has raised serious questions about communication protocols and ground vehicle tracking.

The NTSB’s preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the firetruck involved in the collision received audible warnings to stop, but did not realize the commands were directed at him. The warning, transmitted over the airport’s radio frequency, was not clearly identified as being for the firetruck, leading to confusion in the critical seconds before impact. The driver reportedly continued onto the runway as a Delta Boeing 737 was accelerating for takeoff.

Investigators now say that a runway status light system—a technology that automatically illuminates red lights on the ground to warn vehicles and pilots when a runway is unsafe—could have prevented the disaster. The system, which is already in use at dozens of major U.S. airports, provides a direct visual cue that does not rely on radio communication. LaGuardia, however, had not yet installed the technology at the time of the incident.

The collision resulted in significant damage to the aircraft and minor injuries to passengers and crew. The NTSB continues to analyze cockpit voice recordings and ground radar data, but the early report underscores a systemic gap in safety infrastructure. As air travel volumes surge, the agency is urging airports to prioritize the installation of automated ground warning systems to bridge the gap between human error and technological safeguards.
