A new manufacturing process could change how people with complex vision problems get contact lenses. Researchers have developed a method to 3D print soft contact lenses in about 20 minutes, potentially eliminating the need for multiple visits to an eye doctor.
The breakthrough addresses a long-standing challenge in optometry: creating comfortable, well-fitting lenses for patients with irregular cornea shapes. Standard mass-produced contacts often fail to fit properly for these individuals, leading to discomfort or blurred vision. Current custom solutions require labor-intensive grinding and polishing, which can take weeks.
The new technique uses a specialized resin that hardens under ultraviolet light. A 3D printer builds the lens layer by layer, following a digital scan of the patient's eye. The result is a soft, flexible lens tailored to the exact curvature of the cornea. Early tests show the printed lenses match the optical quality of conventional ones.
Researchers say the process could significantly reduce costs and wait times. Patients would only need one appointment for a scan, and the lenses could be printed while they wait. The team is now working to refine the material for longer wear and to meet safety standards for commercial use. If successful, the method could make custom contact lenses accessible to millions of people who currently struggle with standard options.
