Telstra has confirmed that Wednesday's widespread network outage, which left millions of customers without mobile or internet service for several hours, was triggered by faulty timers inside its data centres. The company stated that specific "nodes" responsible for managing time synchronisation within the network infrastructure malfunctioned, causing a cascading failure across the system.
However, Telstra has admitted it still does not know what caused the timers to break in the first place. In a statement released Thursday, the telecommunications giant said engineers have identified the failed components but have yet to determine the root cause of the timer errors. The outage began around midday and affected voice calls, data services, and some business systems, disrupting everything from banking transactions to emergency calls.
Telstra has apologised to customers and said it is working to prevent a repeat incident. The company is now reviewing its network architecture and has launched an internal investigation. While services were restored by late Wednesday evening, the lack of a clear explanation for the timer failure has raised concerns about the resilience of Australia's largest telecom network. Industry analysts are calling for greater transparency and more robust backup systems to avoid future disruptions.
