Verde Technologies is changing course with its perovskite solar panel business, moving away from rooftop installations and aiming instead at the space industry. The startup now believes its thin-film technology is better suited for powering orbital data centers and large satellite constellations than for residential or commercial buildings.
The company originally focused on bringing lightweight, flexible perovskite panels to the consumer solar market. Perovskite materials promise higher efficiency and lower production costs compared to traditional silicon, but they have struggled with durability and long-term stability in Earth's weather conditions. By targeting space, Verde can sidestep those environmental challenges. In the vacuum of orbit, panels face no rain, wind, or humidity, and the main threats are radiation and extreme temperature swings, which perovskite coatings can potentially handle better than heavier silicon cells.
Verde is betting that the growing demand for space-based computing and communications will create a steady need for cheap, high-efficiency power sources. Large constellations require thousands of panels, and every kilogram of weight saved on launch translates into significant cost reductions. The company is now working with satellite manufacturers to test its perovskite cells in orbit, with early demonstration missions planned within the next two years. If successful, the shift could open up a niche but rapidly expanding market, even as terrestrial perovskite solar remains years away from widespread commercial use.
