Q&A: Listening with light—an innovative new technology for studying the seafloor

The seafloor is far more than a muddy bottom. It is a dynamic landscape that supports deep-sea ecosystems, stores carbon, and holds critical infrastructure like pipelines and communication cables. Yet scientists have long struggled to observe the subtle processes that shape this hidden world. Traditional methods, such as sonar or sediment coring, offer snapshots but miss the constant, quiet activity of water moving through sediments, organisms burrowing, or gas seeping up from below.

Now, a team of researchers has developed a novel approach that uses light to "listen" to the seafloor. The technology relies on a fiber-optic cable that acts as a distributed acoustic sensor. When a laser is sent through the cable, tiny vibrations in the surrounding environment cause the light to scatter in measurable ways. By analyzing these changes, scientists can detect movements as small as a few nanometers across kilometers of cable.

This method offers a major advantage: it can monitor the seafloor continuously and over large areas without disturbing the habitat. Early tests have revealed previously unseen patterns, such as the rhythmic pulsing of underwater currents and the faint tremors caused by marine life. The data could help predict slope failures that threaten coastal communities, improve the design of offshore wind farms, and inform conservation strategies for fragile deep-sea corals.

The team is now working to deploy the system in deeper waters and longer durations. They believe this light-based listening could become a standard tool for oceanographers, much like seismometers are for land-based geology. For now, it offers a rare, real-time glimpse into the slow, constant motion of the world beneath the waves.
